With the goal he scored last night against Juventus, Cristiano Ronaldo broke Messi’s record for the most Champions League goals scored in a calendar year and equaled Filippo Inzaghi’s record for most goals in a single Champions League group stage — with two matches still remaining.
In the match between Juventus and Real Madrid, which ended 2–2, the goal scored by Cristiano Ronaldo against Buffon was not only crucial for Real Madrid’s qualification to the Champions League Round of 16, but also historic for CR7 himself.
With 14 goals, the Portuguese superstar shattered the previous record for most Champions League goals scored in a calendar year, previously held by Lionel Messi with 13 goals.
Cristiano Ronaldo also equaled Filippo Inzaghi’s record for the highest number of goals scored in a single Champions League group stage, with 8 goals. A record CR7 could still improve, considering Real Madrid still had two group-stage matches left to play.
In the all-time ranking of European competition goalscorers, Cristiano Ronaldo moved into 7th place alongside Thierry Henry and Henrik Larsson with 59 goals.
After the match, Cristiano Ronaldo appeared satisfied and stated:
“We are improving little by little, and from now on it will become increasingly difficult to beat us, but we can still do more. I’m in a good moment, I always want to give more year after year, but personal records do not interest me. Winning is the only thing that matters.”
He also commented on Sepp Blatter’s imitation of him:
“The Blatter episode? I respond only on the pitch, not off it. I’m on a higher level. Blatter is old news, I don’t want to talk about it anymore. I only think about helping my team.
