As the calendar year draws to a close, FIFA traditionally names the finalists for its annual awards. Among the most important is the Puskas Award, given since 2009 to the player (or player) who scores the best goal of the year in all global competitions.
This year’s Puskas Award finalists include an Italian for the first time: Alessandro Florenzi, with his 50-meter goal against Barcelona, marking his Roma’s Champions League debut of the season. The other finalists are Lionel Messi, the ever-present, with his goal against Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey, and Wendell Lira, who scored a stunning overhead kick in the match between Goianesia (his former club) and Atlético Goianiense.
